The Short-arm: Beyond the Results in Round 2 of The Rugby Championship

Aah man! It sucks when things just don’t go the way you want them to. The Springboks had control of the match against the All Blacks, just to stumble at the end… again. It makes me worry that the Springboks lose composure in the last quarter of their matches, particularly against good teams. Hopefully these losses can be turned into important lessons that will result in the Springboks winning The Rugby World Cup (RWC). If they go on to lose a game at the death during the finals at the RWC, I’m going to lose it! But enough of that. The standard of rugby this weekend has been fantastic to watch! The Springboks against the All Blacks was a true heavyweight fight. Those guys must all be feeling it after all the big hits and blood-loss after that match! What a treat it was to watch. I must say Los Pumas were doing well to stay in contention with the Aussies by the end of the first half in their match. But damn! Australia is starting to show some real danger signs to the other teams while Argentina seems to be going backwards. The final of The Rugby Championship between Australia and New Zealand is going to be big! For the first time both teams are on equal points heading into the final match.

Stand-out performances:

South Africa (20) vs New Zealand (27)

Schalk Burger (SA) – The Burger all South Africans like to see! Strong, physical and keeping McCaw and Read in check. Did well leading the team under those circumstances.

Jesse Kriel (SA) – This youngster keeps on impressing. Its not everyday you see someone break right through the middle of the best center combination in the world of Nonu and Smith. He made it look easy! Great on defense and able to turn the ball over in the midfield. He is a keeper!

Lood de Jager (SA) – The baby-faced giant had a cracker! Commanded the lineout well, and just about smashed everything in his way! The combination of him with Etzebeth are going to make teams wet themselves. Seriously unlucky his arms weren’t any longer to score that try.

Richie McCaw (NZ) – How is he still able to walk after all these years of rugby, let alone show that he is still one of the best out there. Then there was that sneaky try that he scored to win it for the All Blacks… I never saw it coming, well played!

Lima Sopoaga (NZ) – Watch out Carter, Barret, Cruden and just about every other flyhalf in NZ. An all round game and on debut as well! Could have kicked a bit better, but he sure gets that backline firing.

Dane Coles (NZ) – A hooker that can run like a center, and he has some gas too! Apart from that he really gets stuck into the rough stuff too. He will most likely wear the No. 2 jersey for a very long time to come.

Argentina (9) vs Australia (34)

Israel Folau (Aus) – Once again he shows just how good he is at the back under the high ball! Set up two tries and he run for days!

David Pocock (Aus) – His first start in a very long time, and he was a beast on defense and a thief in the rucks! A well timed return to some his best form just prior to the RWC.

Santiago Cordero (Arg) – One of the few in the Argentine team who had any real presence.
